The Arts Council of Indianapolis and Primary Colours collaborate each summer to offer a series of professional development workshops for central Indiana artists. Past topics have included accounting, legal matters, portfolio development, photographing your own artwork, technology issues for artists, writing your artist statement, grant writing for artists and more. But how do you sell it in order to "share it" with others? How do you survive and live off your artwork without a "regular job"? How do you mix and mingle, engage and close a sale and enjoy the whole experience. It is an art form in itself! Learn tried-and-true tips from artists, gallery owners and others for engaging casually interested buyers and turn them from simply interested into full-fledged arts patrons. Panelists: Pauline Moffatt, Executive Director of the IndyFringe Festival. Along with her current role working with hundreds of performing artists, Pauline spent eight years in Melbourne Australia working with the Hotel for the Arts promoting and profiling emerging and established visual artists who exhibited in the building. Linda Dorman, Studio Manager for Tom Torluemke Studio and former gallery owner Tom Torluemke, artist and former gallery owner Ron Zimmerman, Vice President and COO at Elona Biotechnologies, Inc. with 17 years of salesmanship experience including managing and training sales teams of over 100 professionals. July14, 6pm: Authentic Arts Marketing with Adam Thurman | This workshop is Full. Marketing doesn’t have to be a necessary evil. It can be a positive, honest reflection of the art you create. It can be something that you actually LOVE doing. This workshop is designed to help you get that point. Over the course of an entertaining and engaging three hour workshop you will: 1. Gain a different perspective on arts marketing 2. Identify your artistic values 3. Learn how to translate those values into specific marketing tactics that will ultimately cause more people to connect with your art Each participant will also receive an electronic copy of Adam's e-Book, Authentic Arts Marketing. If you’re looking to take your marketing to a new, exciting, place this is the workshop for you. Adam Thurman is President of Mission Paradox, a consulting firm that focuses on connecting art and audience in Chicago, IL. As part of Mission Paradox he has led presentations and workshops for Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Civic Knowledge Project and the Arts and Business Council. He also maintains a widely read arts marketing blog at www.missionparadox.com In addition, Adam is the Director of Marketing and communications at Court Theatre, one of the largest nonprofit theatres in Chicago. During his tenure as Director of Marketing the theatre has had some of the highest grossing productions in their more than 50-year history. He has been recognized as an Emerging Leader by Americans For the Arts and the Theatre Communication Group. He has also been featured in Time Out New York and the Chicago Tribune. August 11, 6pm: Licensing your Artwork (Note this date has been changed from July 28) For artists interested in licensing their work for everything from calendars and greeting cards to posters and wine labels, Betsy Knotts can help. Betsy is not only a glass artist in her own right, she is also responsible for licensing the Garfield characters. Betsy and trademark lawyer Connie Lindman will take you through the process of licensing your work while still protecting your copyright and interests. Betsy Knotts: Betsy Knotts has worked for a fat, orange cat named Garfield for over 25 years (well, actually she works for Paws, Inc., his official headquarters). During that time, the furry feline has had her create designs for a variety of products ranging from padded toilet seats to collectible gold jewelry; direct his art department and expand his empire into the world of ecommerce.Before joining Paws, Inc., she worked for Simon Property Group, the largest real estate developer in the Unites States. As part of their marketing team, she created advertising programs used by over 150 Simon properties and was also an Account Manager for several malls, assisting them in developing successful marketing strategies to build shopping center traffic and increase store sales.Previous to her position at Simon Property Group, she worked at various small advertising agencies in Indianapolis and Muncie, Indiana, developing campaigns for industrial, agricultural and retail clients.A 1977 graduate of Ball State University, she currently resides in Indianapolis with her husband, Spencer, and two mischievous cats, neither of which will have anything to do with Garfield. Connie Lindman: Connie Lindman provides legal services in the fields of intellectual property, marketing & distribution, and employment and consulting contracts drawing on over twenty years of experience in large law firm practice, as General Counsel for two publishing companies and in private practice. Before going into private practice as a solo practitioner and then with Overhauser & Lindman, Connie served as Vice President Business Affairs at InterArt Holding Corporation, a subsidiary of Hallmark Cards and parent company of Sunrise Publications. In addition to serving as General Counsel for InterArt, Connie managed the artist relations, distribution, and licensing agency departments during the course of her six-year tenure. Connie’s legal duties included the negotiation of all contracts for the company, the prosecution and protection of all copyrights and trademark registrations, and overseeing all other legal matters. Connie began her legal career in the Intellectual Property department of Kirkland & Ellis where she represented Fortune 500 companies, including General Motors and Kraft Foods, in intellectual property litigation and prosecuted federal trademark applications and registration rights. Connie received her J.D. Magna cum Laude from the Indiana University School of Law in 1989 and her B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Indiana University in 1985.
NEW LOCATION! The Arts Council of Indianapolis has moved to a new building at 924 N. Pennsylvania Street, right next to the Living Room Lounge. All workshops will take place in our new offices. Parking is free on the street after 6pm or in our lot just south of the building.
