CITY PARTNERS WITH ARTS COUNCIL OF INDIANAPOLIS TO LAUNCH CITYWIDE MURALS PROGRAM

"46 for XLVI" kicks off with 46 new murals planned in neighborhoods and Downtown

INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Greg Ballard today was joined by representatives of the Arts Council of Indianapolis, community members and artists in launching "46 for XLVI," the first citywide murals program for Indianapolis. Forty-six new mural spaces are being planned in neighborhoods and the Downtown area in celebration of Super Bowl XLVI and as a beautification effort to support the Super Bowl Legacy projects taking place throughout the City.

"The arts play a vital role in enhancing our urban environment. The "46 for XLVI" murals will beautify our neighborhoods and are an innovative and creative way to augment the extensive infrastructure work underway across the City," said Mayor Ballard.

The Arts Council received more than 100 submissions from local, national and international artists through a national call for mural artists. Thirty-two finalists, one-third of whom are Indiana artists, soon will begin work. Ten murals will be placed on the Downtown Canal. Other areas around the City that will house murals include:

  • East 10th Street corridor
  • Pennsy Trail and Monon Trail
  • 30th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street
  • 37 Place in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood
  • Concord Urban Farm
  • Babe Denny neighborhood south of Lucas Oil Stadium
  • Commercial buildings in the Downtown core

"We hope to capture the excitement and vibrancy of our city, celebrate the arts, share the enormous talent of artists both local and national, and create opportunities for all of us to experience art in and around our beautiful city," Arts Council President Dave Lawrence said.

The web site www.indyarts.org/murals launches today to invite community participation in the program and share up-to-date information on selected artists, locations and previews of mural designs. Funding is comprised of a mix of public and private support including pacesetters such as the John H. Boner Community Center and the East 10th Street Civic Association through the work of the Legacy Economic Development Committee, the Indianapolis Bond Bank and private donors. The Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC) is assisting with the collection of private, tax-deductible contributions, which may be sent to GIPC, 200 E. Washington St., Suite 1901, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
