Description

Artist Damon Lamar Reed aimed to recognize and celebrate the strong African American cultural heritage found along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Reed's mural asks the viewer to reflect on changes in race relations by depicting modern scenes in a historic Martin Luther King, Jr. peace march.

After graduating from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000, Damon Lamar Reed began his career as a public artist. To date he has completed over 50 public works in everywhere from schools to libraries and businesses. Damon creates artwork to inspire and inform. He believes that the POWER of art can bring positive change. He works with organizations such as Chicago Public Art Group, Art Resources in Teaching, and Archi-treasures.

In 2001, Damon received a Camille Cosby Scholarship to attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture residency program. Two years later, Kerry James Marshall selected him to be in his exhibition, One True thing: Meditations in Black Aesthetics at the Museum of Contemporary Art.  Damon has also exhibited at the Museum of Science and Industry, Northwestern University, Loyola University, and University of Illinois at Chicago.

Also a hip-hop artist, Damon incorporates the same creativity and themes while expressing it in a different medium. His latest CD "He Heard My Cry" was nationally distributed and garnered international acclaim.
